The city of Zushi was established
in 1954, as the 384th city in Japan. It covers an area of about
17.5 square kilometers, and has a population of approximately 60,000.
Located in the southwest of Tokyo, its neighboring cities include Kamakura
(ancient capital of Japan in the late 12th century) and
Yokohama (famous for its international harbor). Zushi has long been a popular suburban of Tokyo (about 50 minutesf ride by train), and is famous for being a residential area of many cultural figures, including the current governor of Tokyo Mr. Shintaro Ishihara. The city takes pride in its
coastal beaches and lush greenery (hence the city pronouncement to
maintain a peace-loving city, rich with blue waters and green hillsides),
and strives to further its urban development with a high sense of design
while keeping in harmony with its landscape and cultural background. Zushi also ranks No.1 in transparency of public information disclosure, among 698 local municipalities nationwide, according to survey conducted by Nikkei (Nihon Keizai Shinbun) in 2002. |
