The Yayoi Period was a time in history when human life on the Japanese archipelago changed dramatically. Ancient people had depended on rich natural resources for tens of thousands of years. The Yayoi people, however, began cultivating nature to obtain even more benefit. They had promoted a rice-growing agricultural system originally introduced from China and the Korean Peninsula. This, however, led to the beginning of disputes involving land, water, harvest and other matters.

Many tons of artifacts excavated from the Ikego archeological sites indicate that many trees were cut down in that area during ancient times. This was done in a manner that did not inflict crushing damage to the eco system, however. This was because these predecessors were in awe of trees and forests and considered them sacred. The Yayoi people believed that the gods lived in nature so they protected it carefully. Unfortunately, this belief has been forgotten in more modern decades though.

The artifacts exhibited here are proof that the ancient Yayoi people definitely lived in the Ikego area during ancient times. We hope that viewing this exhibit will help visitors gaze into their hearts and minds and imagine the Yayoi people hunting deer and other game in the frightening darkness of night as they struggled to survive day-by-day, month-by-month and year-by year.
